The UPSC ESE 2027 Exam Date for the Preliminary/Stage-I examination is January 31, 2027. The Main/Stage-II examination will be conducted on June 18, 2027.
UPSC ESE 2027 Vacancy
The UPSC ESE 2027 Vacancy has been notified as approximately 480 posts. The notification includes approximately 19 vacancies for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), comprising specified vacancies for different disability categories.
The Commission has clarified that the number of vacancies is liable to alteration. Reservations will be applicable for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwBD categories as per the Government of India rules.

UPSC ESE 2027 Application Form
Candidates interested in the UPSC ESE 2027 Apply Online process must submit their application through the UPSC online application portal.

Female candidates and candidates belonging to SC, ST and PwBD categories are exempted from payment of the examination fee. OBC and EWS candidates are required to pay the prescribed fee.
UPSC ESE 2027 Eligibility Criteria
Candidates should carefully check the UPSC ESE 2027 Eligibility Criteria before submitting their application. Eligibility conditions include nationality, age limit, educational qualification, medical examination and physical standards.
Nationality
A candidate must be one of the following:
- A citizen of India;
- A subject of Nepal;
- A subject of Bhutan;
- A Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India; or
- A person of Indian origin who has migrated from specified countries with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Candidates belonging to certain categories may be required to obtain a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.
Age Limit
For the UPSC Engineering Services Examination 2027, a candidate must have attained 21 years of age and must not have attained 30 years as on January 1, 2027.
Therefore, the candidate must have been born:
- Not earlier than January 2, 1997
- Not later than January 1, 2006
The notification also provides age relaxations for eligible candidates belonging to specified categories, including SC, ST, OBC, PwBD, ex-servicemen and certain government servants, subject to the conditions prescribed in the rules.
Educational Qualification
For the UPSC ESE 2027 Eligibility Criteria, candidates generally need an engineering qualification. The notification specifies that a candidate must have obtained a degree in Engineering from a recognised university/institution established under the applicable Indian laws.
Certain other qualifications recognised under the notification are also accepted, including specified qualifications from the Institution of Engineers (India), Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, Aeronautical Society of India and Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, subject to the conditions mentioned in the notification.
For certain posts under Electronics-related services, specified M.Sc. qualifications are also permitted as prescribed in the notification.
Candidates who have appeared in a qualifying examination but have not yet received their result may also apply, subject to the conditions specified by UPSC. Candidates qualifying for the Personality Test/Interview will have to provide proof of the required qualification within the prescribed period.
UPSC ESE 2027 Selection Process
The UPSC Engineering Services Examination 2027 selection process consists of three stages:
- Stage-I: Engineering Services Preliminary Examination
- Stage-II: Engineering Services Main Examination
- Stage-III: Personality Test/Interview
The Preliminary Examination consists of objective-type papers, while the Main Examination consists of conventional-type engineering papers.
Stage-I: Preliminary Examination
The Preliminary Examination consists of two objective-type papers carrying a total of 500 marks:

Paper-II will correspond to the candidate’s selected engineering discipline—Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.
There is negative marking in the objective papers. For every incorrect answer, one-third of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted. No penalty is imposed for a question left unanswered.
Stage-II: Main Examination
Candidates qualifying in the Preliminary Examination will be eligible for the Main Examination, subject to the prescribed conditions.
The Main Examination consists of two conventional-type papers in the candidate’s engineering discipline. Each paper carries 300 marks and has a duration of three hours, making the total 600 marks.
Stage-III: Personality Test/Interview
Candidates qualifying for the Main Examination as per the minimum qualifying marks prescribed by UPSC are called for the Personality Test/Interview.
The Personality Test/Interview carries 200 marks. The final ranking is determined based on marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination, Main Examination and Personality Test/Interview.
UPSC ESE 2027 Examination Centres
The Preliminary Examination will be conducted at multiple centres across India, including Bhopal, Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Chandigarh, Dehradun and others.
The notification states that centre allotment will be on a first-apply-first-allot basis for centres subject to the prescribed ceiling. Candidates are therefore advised to apply early if they want a particular examination centre.
Important Instructions for UPSC ESE 2027
Candidates should keep the following instructions in mind:
- Applications must be submitted online only.
- Candidates should provide a valid and active email ID.
- Candidates must upload the photograph and capture a live photograph as prescribed.
- Candidates have to upload their signature as per the specified instructions.
- The application cannot be withdrawn after submission.
- No correction/modification is allowed in the submitted application form.
- Candidates must carry the prescribed photo ID for the examination.
- Mobile phones, smart watches and other prohibited electronic devices are not allowed inside the examination venue.
- Candidates must undergo face authentication at the examination venue.
- Entry to the examination venue will close 30 minutes before the commencement of each session.
